(I know this question has been asked a million times already) So I’m guessing there are a lot of teenagers on Oppo, (or I’m the only 14 year old here) So what do you want for your first car? If you are old enough to have a license what was your first car?
Keep budget at 15k , lets be realistic here. I would want a Honda S2000. (Even though I’ll probably wrap it around a tree.)

My first car was one of these, 1.3 diesel.
Traded it in after 8-9 months because it kept breaking down.

I think the only red flags for me as regards a first car are:
1. More power than grip
2. Handling quirks (MR cars, Rear-engined cars, etc...)
3. Unreliable/prone to breakdowns
For the most part, safety in a car relies a lot more on judgment than technique. I’ve seen plenty of clapped out 1995 corollas blasting down twisty roads, body rolling all over the place and jerking from side to side because the steering is loose.

my first car was a 2001 Integra GS. By the time it was crashed on the parkway..I had put DC ceramic headers, magnaflow cat back exhaust, magnaflow high flow cat converter, 20% tints all around, type r replica front lip, black LS webs and stripped the back down to metal cause autocross...
god i miss that car :(. Good lucking finding a S2K for that price, but if you do, jump on it ASAP!

It’s what I call a 10 foot car, it looks good until you get up close then you notice a few imperfections here and there. Still not bad for 17 years old and 170,000 miles.
It is an M3 (automatic but it’s a damn good auto)! No debadging though, though the trunk badge was missing when I bought the car.

I borrowed my parent’s truck (2005 Ford Ranger I4) from High school until a few months into my first real job, then I bought a Genesis Coupe after a serious amount of shopping. http://oppositelock.kinja.com/2014-hyundai-g…
I would have loved an S2000, but the premium for a 100k car (as they all are) is getting a bit ridiculous. If you can find a good one though...

Unpopular opinion time:
My family currently has a LEAF for one of our cars:
I haven’t driven it yet, but I think I’ll like it. It’s kind of a perfect first car.
2013 models (such as ours) are dropping below 15k
Not too much power
No paying for gas or other internal combustion engine upkeep
Limited range means that your parents can worry less about where you could be going
Ample room. It fits 4 in comfort, 5 in a pinch

My first car was a 2000 3.2TL that my parents sold while I was in my second year of college out of state. I got it when I was an 11th grader in high school.
My parents told me if I switched to a magnet school and gave up all my friends, when I could drive in 10th grade, I could have a 2012 IS350 F-Sport. (Last generation IS). Yeah, um, never got it. Got a new set of friends though, pretty awesome. Now they’re promising me a GS F-Sport when I graduate high school. I’m not betting on it. I’m planning how far down my career I can pick up an E63 wagon as the first car I buy myself.

What I mean is that if the car is good at going fast but not really good at turning, you can have a pretty bad time. Saw lots of old mustangs/camaros (I suddenly can’t remember which way is the right way to spell that) that went off of sharp curves.
MR cars can tend towards lift-off oversteer, and since most people, especially new drivers, will immediately get off the gas if -anything- goes wonky, it can lead to some nastiness. RR cars have a similar issue. Granted I’ve never had this problem in a MR or RR car, but I don’t tend to push cars to the limit either. And you’re right; it was far more of a problem in the days before traction and stability control programs.
My main point about reliability is you don’t want something breaking while you’re driving. Best case, you have to limp it somewhere. Moderate case, you need a ride. Worst case, you’ve become intimately acquainted with the roadside shrubbery.

If we’re counting family hand-me-downs, my first car was a 1976 Triumph 2500. A big (by British standards) RWD sedan with a lovely 2.5 litre straight six and a manual transmission, it was a fantastic first car – it was sporty (Triumph filled a market niche similar to BMW’s today), but not powerful enough to get me into any real trouble, and dealing with the quirks of a high-mileage older car definitely put me in good stead for the rest of my automotive career.
If we’re counting from the first car bought with my own money, that would be a rather rusty Rover 3500 SD1. If you can tell, I have a bit of a thing for older British iron. It was about as far away from a ‘sensible’ choice as I could get, with a gas-guzzling V8, tail-happy handling, and some serious reliability issues. Still, it was a fantastic learning experience, and, when it was running right, and not in the body shop having various panels welded up, it was absolutely brilliant to drive.
Both cars were cheap – my parents paid around $5000 for the Triumph nearly 20 years before I started driving it, and the Rover cost me half that – not very fast by modern standards, and pretty rough around the edges. I wouldn’t have it any other way, though: they were characterful, fun to drive, and most importantly, though their quirks and failings, they taught me a huge amount, far more than a ‘good’ car would have. I miss them both dearly.

It was indeed. They run in the family: my parents had three of them at one stage, one with a very rare fuel-injection option, and my grandmother still owns a Triumph station wagon that she bought new in 1968!

You are 14? Holy crap. That means that ten years before you were born, I was given my first car. It was a 1980 Pontiac Phoenix. You won’t know what that is. (Do you know what a Pontiac is? ;) ) It was the Pontiac version of the Chevy Citation, only (allegedly) sportier and luxuriouser. No, it wasn’t. It was a steaming heap of crap, and my stepdad got tired of trying to fix it and swapped it for a Chevy Celebrity. That was much better. No, really, it was. It was an awesome car that was damn near indestructible.

Want: ‘90s Subaru Legacy Turbo. Keep in mind I was living in Northern California with absolutely no snow. What would be a better car than a high-mileage leaky car packed with discontinued or otherwise no longer available technology?
Actual:
1995 Acura Integra GS-R.
It was the best 1.5 years of my life and I miss that car every day. True, the engine made as much torque as a double-amputee wringing out a towel, but it came live when the tachometer needle climbed past the number “5”.

“First car” is a fun question for me because I have the weirdest answer. I’m a member of a family of three that at any given moment has owned as many as six road cars. As a result I was never in a rush to have a car of my own, because I didn’t need to.
This was officially my first car. I bought it in 2007, drove it the grand total of two miles, then stripped it to turn it into a desert truck
Sadly it was sold as an incomplete roller in 2012.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
This was my first official car that I drove more than two miles. I bought it in 2011 sight unseen. Flew out to Las Vegas, picked it up with a U-Haul, entered it in a 500 mile desert race with just 20 test miles in it, and ultimately watched helplessly from the side of the highway as the second shift driver and co-driver fixed it at mile 172 (I drove it fine to mile 160, they went 12 miles and broke it, taking us out of the race). After five hours of repairs we loaded it up on the trailer, slept that night in the U-Haul, drove to Reno so the others could catch their respective flights, and I solo towed it back to Massachusetts. It’s been in my garage since, waiting for me to get the money and team together to race it again.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
And that brings me to my third car, and finally my first road car. After years of having cars that were designated mine but not legally
mine,
I bought this last year. I’d searched the entire country for 07-09 manual Outback XTs, and found a grand total of five for sale.
In the entire country.
This one, by some miracle, was just an hour south of me. I kept a close eye on it on the dealer website while I slowly amassed a down payment. Then one day I discover it’s on ebay, sitting at less than half the dealer’s original $12,000 asking price. Unwilling to let it escape when it will be who knows how long before I find another nearby I check the carfax, deem it clean, get a loan and bid, getting it for $8,500. That was November. Since then it’s had a turbo swap, new injectors, new clutch, timing belt replacement, new tires, and new brakes. It has been driven through 22 states and seen both oceans. There is now newer car that suits my needs that I would take over this.

Here’s my experience:
EXPECTATION. Walking the car lots with my dad, shopping for my first car, I was young and had no clue what to look for, nor how expensive cars were. I honestly thought that pearl white 300ZX for $10k was reasonable for me. My dad heartily disagreed.
REALITY. A few weeks later, my dad and I take off early one morning to hit the Uhaul and get a tow dolly for my new ride! I had no idea what it’d be! Arrive at hospice thrift store and dad pays $300 for a faded burgundy 89 Toyota Tercel coupe with a blown piston. For serious.
At the time, of course, my reality was shattered, but after a couple weeks of wrenching and getting it up and running, I was happy to have my own car. Thanks, dad. :)

I bought a horrible 2001 chevy prizm for $1500 as my first car at 17. It only had 120,000 miles, but it drank oil. I had to put in a quarry of oil every time I filled the gas tank, and even more often if I was driving on the highway often. I drove that for a year and a half until I was done with high school, then I bought a 2005 mazda 6 with the 3.0l v6 and the 5 speed for $5000. It has more than enough power to be fun, plus it has very good handling.

First car was a Plymouth Breeze, 2.0L. White w/ white hubcaps, but I got some 15” Enkies on it quickly. No frills, manual everything except the trans, but it did have a nice head unit! Thats all I really cared about. Oh, and it could pull some wicked hand brake J-turns!
Second car, which I then had my name on the title, was a Dodge Stratus (2nd gen). Had that for about 8 years and had some great times in it. Installed my first full stereo, took it on some long trips, and turned it into my winter car when I got the Magnum. Sold it to a dad who was going to give it to his son for his 2nd car (totaled his first one). I wonder if its still alive.

It was a known issue with that engine. They were mostly fine, but once they started burning oil it got really bad really fast. I think it was a problem with the piston rings.

This will be a fun one!
That car over there is a 1991 Volvo 240. It was what should have been my first car. Yes, that is the exact one. $1500. Grandma said no since it was old and slow.
This is a 2013 Honda Civic LX. It ended up being “my” first car. I leased it with my grandma.
This is a 2000 Volvo V70R. It was the first car I actually bought with my own money. It was a total POS though and I sold it.
Now I have this: 2008 Volvo C30. We traded the Civic in for this.
